As you would expect when it comes to saving the planet, many Salt Spring Island residents drive a hybrid car, ride a bicycle, or simply take public transport.
However, a recent count revealed that Salt Spring boasts the highest density of electric vehicle (EV) ownership in the country. In fact, there are three EVs per 1000 residents on the island. The focus on EV began in 2014 with the installation of a Sun Country level II charger at the island’s art theater. The next initiative will see EV chargers installed at B&Bs across the island, thanks to a subsidy from the Capital Regional District and the Salt Spring Chamber of Commerce. With the island’s mild climate, and the 150km range of most popular EV brands, this temperate Gulf Island is an ideal place for an electric vehicle. As transportation contributes up to 28% of our carbon footprint, Salt Spring Islanders are leading the charge in carbon reduction one EV at a time.
